Mason - Vibrant & Animated

09 Dec 2008
We have so so busy! Lots to catch up on! Not to mention, Mason keeps us laughing and on our toes. My favorite line so far has been:

"I don't want to be a smart cookie and dipped in milk!"

Mason has turned into a bit of a singer. Right now her favorite song is the one by Pink...So what.

I also understand that she is learning the language of the kids these days....words like

Chickadee, Frizzled, and Creaked are part of her vocabulary. Chickadee means best friend..what the others mean - I have no idea!!!!

Mason turned 5....Birthday part was a blast! Tons of Build A Bear Gift Cards....Amazing! She was in heaven.

Mason has been enjoying summer vacation. In August she starts Kindgarten - as she puts it - she's going to be a "kinder". Primarily, all we have done is swim. She's still learning to swim but she's too brave for her own good. So, we have her in a life jacket most of the time. Other than a slow summer, we have been watching lots of movies and making cupcakes....

Mason turns 5 in July and we are having a Mariposa party! She loves Mariposa but it woudl be like her to pick a theme that is not licensed...btw it's M A R Y P O S A....not mariposa. Yeah for Barbie teaching our kids the wrong way to say spanish words!

This summar I have seen Mason exert her independence more than ever. In addition, the ability to become a drama queen in a matter of seconds provides for some interesting entertainment. Stay tuned...

It has been a while since I pulled away to update you on Mason. The wonders of this 4 year old should qualify her to be one of the "Wonders of the World". If someone could invent an eye camera I could wear 24/7 I could capture so many of Mason's moments that would catapault you into a laughing hysteria!!

Easter came and went and I have pictures to show you. (Look for email in your inbox) It will be her only "official" pictures for this year. She took school pics and decided to be a clown (thanks to mommy) and well they look like someone just showed her an ice cream cone - huge smile and very wide eyes.....so we said no to the pics. Mason allowed me to buy her a dress this year and she actually wore it!

We registered Mason for kindergarten. It was an interesting process but with the many kids and parents that showed up for registration, I felt like cattle being pushed through the lines. Of course, I learned it's difficult to read a social security card. Is it first name first or last name first....hahahaha (kidding!!!)

So Mason is growing like a weed. She's stretching. She's also getting smarter, which for Jimmy and I is a pleasue to watch but are having to stay one step ahead of her. She catches on so quickly to everything that we are saying. As far skills that seem to be sharpening up is an interest in singing. But she's been singing since she could speak; however, now, she's not afraid to sing to everyone. I have video now of her singing one of Beyonce's songs. It's really cute. She seems to like numbers as she's always counting things and Jimmy works with her on adding and subtracting. She's really into art and drawing family pictures right now. Considering her excellent memory, she can commit a book to memory in a couple of readings, so we hope that doesn't hold back her ability to start reading...but we will see.

I'm going to start a new page of her funny quotes and one-liners. But I have to remember to write them down! She says so many funny things that I find myself thoroughly entertained by her......

until next time!

....funny

Mason is taking a bath and sometimes I sit on the tub and put my feet in the water. So, she looks at my tattoo and says, "Mom can I scrub off your tattoo?" So, she proceeds to scratch off my tattoo and then looks at me, perplexed...."Why is your tattoo made of glue?

I couldn't contain my laughter...I love this girl.

Mason was grounded on Tuesday. For a whole week. It's the second time we have had to ground her, but the first time was one day. That was really hard on her. This time the teacher waited for me to pick her up to let me know how Mason was behaving in class. It was really embarrassing because I didn't know what to say. I will never take a teacher's side first - this I have learned from the many kooky teachers I had the unfortunate pleasure of knowing - but asked for details. So Mason and I talked about it and I grounded her for 7 days. The agreement of her being grounded is: no television, no candy, in bed by 8 pm, she had to apologize to her teachers and she will listen to their instructions. Today's progress report stated she had a "better day"? I'm sorry, but what? So I guess as I learn to decipher what "better" means, we just have to keep reminding Mason about listening to her teachers.

We encourage Mason to be independent but she understands that if she misbehaves then her privileges get taken away. However, one thing I have learned, is you never just tell a child you are upset with them and walk away. You have to ask them once you are down expressing your feelings - why they feel they are in trouble. Mason always reiterates what she thinks we meant and so, we take the time to explain to her why we are upset until she understands. For example, I will ask her, why is mommy upset with you? To which she will say "because I want to listen." Clearly, it's not why I'm upset with her but will have to reiterate the action that caused us to be disappointed in her choices for the day. Once it's clear to her, she will give us her version of why we are upset with her that is true to what we stated.

We definitely keep an open line of communication with her - even though she's 4 - it's the best way to show her she matters to us and that we acknowledge how important her thoughts, comments, choices, etc are to us.

So far, it's been a very long 2 days for her. But we are making it fun by keeping a grounded chart. It has the days of the week and each day she does well in school - behavior wise - she gets a check mark. When the last day is checked marked, she gets all her privileges back.

Of course, each day we will have to remind her to "listen."

It has been a while since you last heard from me. Well, where to start. Christmas was a blast! The entire family came to our house and helped us celebrate into the whee hours of Xmas Eve. There was lots to eat and drink.....Christmas Day the kids - Mason and Joshua - woke up to probably the biggest toy store they have ever seen. It wasn't done intentionally, they just got so many gifts from everyone. I believe Mason has enough Bratz dolls to last her at least until next Christmas - by then they will all be without clothes and probably no hair - she's alot like me when it comes to dolls. They were experiment victims.

We spent a very quiet New Year - watching TV - and watching the countdowns. It was nice....to say the least. Jimmy, Mason and I played never-ending scrabble. That was fun.

Mason got me some Disney mugs for my birthday. It was a nice remembrance of trying to stay young.

Mason's latest thing is being a cheerleader and as of recently attended her first cheer clinic. She was very excited and learned a cheer and a dance routine. She got most of it and looked so darn cute performing.

I bought a treadmill. Finally had to do it. Having to drive anywhere to exercise is enough of an excuse to not do it. So now the treadmill lives in my living room. We couldn't get it upstairs, so it will stay there until we get enough people over to help us move it. One of the things that is important to me, is that Mason learn that being active and healthy is just part of life. She definitely understands healthy eating. No, really. Sometimes she will ask for a sweet snack such as ice cream and I give in. In a few minutes, she proclaims that she is throwing it away because she wants something healthy. I'm starting to think that junk food doesn't do her well. She will throw sweets away - except for marshmellows - and opt for a fruit.

She loves to be active and has taken an interest in being on the treadmill - yes, any parent would obviously meet that with a stern no - but I don't. She always takes part of any program am I doing, at least for a few minutes. Now she will ask to run on the treadmill; she's doing some walking and running for up to 3 minutes. I make her walk because she just wants to get on and run..... other than that we are working on handstands.

The sad news for the new year is that one of our dogs died. It was very sad for us. Mason has expressed very real feelings and tears about missing the dog. This time though we told her Molly had to stay with the doctor. All the pets that we had where always "going with Jesus" and I guess she had enough of that and demanded that Jesus return her pets....

We bought a new Christmas tree today. Mason picked out the decorations and of course added items to the cart that she felt she couldn't live without. The best part about putting up the tree was watching Mason have the time of her life with a big empty box. (I will never understand kids obsessions with boxes.) While Jimmy put the tree together, I cleaned up the porch. When I walked inside Mason stopped me to show me her new "thing". So she's rolling around in the box on top of the bubble wrap and then tells me "Look mom, a bubble bath!"

What can you say to that other than laugh and take a picture! (Should be up soon!)

Happy Thanksgiving!
Mason said grace today. It was cute! Then she munched all of mom's honey glazed ham. She may have eaten 1/4 of a pound of ham! Mason watched alot of movies and took many pictures. I (mom) hope to have them up soon!

After Karate today, we went to Village Inn to eat dinner and get the pies for Thanksgiving Dinner. Mason sat down to color and after a few minutes asked me to look at her colors and "think of my creative spirit animal". What? So, she showed me how I should think of my creative spirit animal. Not sure where she learned this but I sure would like to know. It was hilarious.

Day 1 of my Mason's online diary. Today I (mom) started karate with her and she took her job of "cheering" me on seriously. I looked over at the beginning of class to make sure she was sitting down when she proceeded to show me that I needed to keep my eyes on the teacher...just like the many times I have done to her...

To be compiled soon!
